Our Number One Tip for Closing and Opening Your Pool - Kelowna, BC

Our Number One Tip for Closing and Opening Your Pool
September 01/2021

As much as we’ve been avoiding it, it’s here - the end of summer and the end of that hot,
Okanagan sunshine we all love so much. Unfortunately with the end of summer comes all of the
fall and winter prep work - including closing your pool.

But don’t close it too early! Our number one tip for closing and opening your pool?

Close late, Open early

Make sure you’re closing and opening your pool with the weather (and water temps) are cold -
you don’t have to keep the water heated, don’t worry! It’s actually better if you don’t.
Why? Algae has a harder time forming in cold water, so if you close and open when the water is
cold, you’ll have a much easier time opening your pool in the spring. Trust us, future you will
thank you!

The Green Guarantee
BioGuard, our water care line of choice, offers what is called a Green Guarantee.
Simply bring in a water sample, and we’ll make recommendations to ensure your winterizing
levels are perfectly balanced. Follow these recommendations and return with a new sample,
and we’ll get that balanced profile on file for you (so you never have to worry about losing that
piece of paper you wrote the information down on beside the pool…)

Return in the first week of May and we’ll send you home with a BioGuard opening kit.  If after 48 hours you still
have green water (i.e., algae is overstaying its welcome in your pool) BioGuard will cover the cost of the products needed to remove it (just make sure the 48-hour water test is returned to us before May 15).

Of course, if you prefer, our service team can open your pool for you, too.

A Few Other Tips to Help The Process
? Remove Debris: A brush and vacuum to remove any dirt can go a long way to
preventing algae build up as well. Don’t forget to clean out the skimmer and pump
baskets, too!
? Water Level: This is an important one and it differs based on where you live. If your pool
water freezes in the winter, water level should be 4-6 inches below the skimmer. On the
other hand, if you’re in an area where water doesn’t freeze, your pool should be almost
overflowing.
? Shock The Pool: Shock your pool to kill bacteria a few days before closing.

? Clean Your Filter: Run your pump for a complete cycle, then backwash and clean your
filter.
? Drain Your Lines: Drain all of your pool equipment (pump, heater, filter, etc.) and add a
pool anti-freeze to prevent freezing and costly burst pipes. No one wants to start of the
spring with an expensive repair bill!
If you have any questions at all about how to properly close and winterize your pool, please give
us a call! Our experts are here to help, and if you prefer, we can come close your pool for you,
too.
