For thousands of years, Finnish saunas have been used for pleasure, relaxation, and overall wellness. While they’re certainly a popular backyard addition for relaxing after a long day of work, did you know they also offer a wealth of health benefits? And not just minor benefits – experts say using a sauna has been linked to living longer and improving your overall heart health.

In the mid-1980s, researchers from the University of Eastern Finland tracked the sauna use of 2,300 middle-aged men for an average of 20 years, based on how often they spent 14 minutes resting in 175-degree Fahrenheit heat; once a week, two or three times a week; or four to seven times.
Throughout the study, researchers discovered that lifespans dramatically increased the more often someone used a sauna. At the same time, regular and frequent sauna visits were also tied to lower death rates from cardiovascular disease and stroke. But don’t take our word for it; check out the study yourself!
In a different study, the Mayo Clinic also found that regular sauna use improved heart health. They reported an increase in heart rate up to 150 beats per minute – a rhythm which creates a similar physiological response as moderate to intense physical activity!
It doesn’t stop there, though. An article in Experimental Gerontology also reinforces the findings, reporting that, “like exercise, regular sauna use generally decreases systolic and diastolic blood pressure.”
