Tips for Winter Hot Tub Maintenance
November 08/2022

One of the great things about owning a hot tub is that you can enjoy it year-round! It’s no secret that winter can get a bit chilly in the Okanagan, so having a hot tub is a great way to stay warm, comfortable, and relaxed.

Regular maintenance and SpaGuard water care products ensure that your hot tub runs smoothly all four seasons. Here are some tips to follow this winter season:

Invest in a Quality Cover

A high-quality, insulated cover will protect your hot tub, it keeps snow and other elements out of your hot tub, it also keeps the water at an optimal temperature. This helps prevent your energy bill from getting too high!

Keep Your Hot Tub at a Safe Temperature

Speaking of temperature there is such a thing as too hot, especially in the winter. While it may be tempting to crank up the heat on those fridged days, make sure you don’t turn it up too high. Experts warn that anything higher than 104 degrees Fahrenheit or 40 degrees Celsius could be dangerous. We suggest that you keep the temperature higher than the average human body temperature (98.6 degrees Fahrenheit or 37 degrees Celsius).

Monitor the Water Levels

Don’t let the water get too low! Low water levels could cause the pump or heater to freeze, resulting in permanent damage to your beloved tub. We recommend that you check your water every couple weeks, to make sure the water levels are okay. Add more water as needed (and don’t use snow as a refill).

Keep it Clean

Make sure that both the water in the tub and the filter(s) stay clean. Not keeping up with hot tub cleaning/maintenance could result in big problems that are complicated to fix in freezing temperatures. If you need to treat your water, visit us in store and check out our SpaGuard (BioGuard) products.

Don’t Let Your Pipes Freeze

An insulated cover is a great way to protect your tub from the elements, but it’s also important to make sure that your pipes don’t freeze – so keep your tub temp warm enough to keep water flowing through all the pipes.

If You Don’t Plan on Using it, Drain It

If you don’t plan on using your hot tub throughout the winter months, the best thing to do is drain it.  Draining your hot tub eliminates operating costs and saves you from having to worry about pipes freezing, we highly recommend booking one of our service techs to winterize your hot tub properly.

Keep Up With Maintenance

Make sure you keep up with hot tub maintenance throughout the winter so that you can get the most out of your tub.
